Started in 1969 by the Colorado PTA President Mary Lou Anderson, Reflections has encouraged millions of students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Students in preschool through grade 12 may create and submit works of art in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.

Reflections gives kids the opportunity to be recognized and awarded for their creativity outside of school.
  • First, entries go to the local school level, where judges secured by the Cox Elementary PTA will review entries.
  • From there, the top 20% of entries are submitted to the council (greater Leander ISD) level.
  • The top 20% of the council entries are awarded at a recognition ceremony in the spring, and one entry from each category and age group is sent to the state level.
There are 6 categories for entry:
  • Dance Choregraphy - This can be any original dance your child creates and performs. If your child loves to dance, get out your video camera and have some fun!
  • Film Production - An original film which must be filmed by your child. This can involve a tripod, though, and some students have just used a cell phone with the forward facing camera. Film must be below 5 minutes, but otherwise, the sky is the limit!
  • Literature - Is your child a budding author? Literary works, handwritten or typed, are accepted, and these works can be fiction or nonfiction. In the younger grades, you can transcribe for your child, too, so don't be overwhelmed if handwriting or typing is a challenge.
  • Music Composition - Does your child enjoy singing or playing an instrument? Take an audio recording of their original work! No notation or scores required for elementary grades, so whatever your child comes up with on his or her own is welcomed, even spur of the moment.
  • Photographer - If your child knows how to operate your phone's camera, he or she can enter this category! Entries can be a single photo or a panoramic image.
  • Visual Arts - An original painting, drawing, collage, or computer generated artwork.
Students may enter any of the 6 categories or all 6. Multiple entries are also allowed. Each entry must be the original work of one student and it must meet the guidelines.
